Phone Repair MythsWe’ve investigated some of the most common mobile phone repair myths, to find out what’s what.

Myth #1: Repairs are so expensive, you may as well buy a new phone

Mobile Phone repair pricing from the likes of Apple or Telstra can be crazy expensive. It’s not surprising some people decide to invest in a brand new phone rather than organise a repair. However, a bit of shopping around can make all the difference. For example, let’s say your selfie camera stops working on your iPhone 8 Plus. Apple will charge you an eye-watering $618.95 for this repair. Getting this done with a third party repairer like fix2U will cost you as little as $139.00. That’s a massive saving of $479.95. So save some money and help save the planet too – repair don’t replace!

Myth #2: 3rd party repairs void your warranty

Won’t repairing my phone with someone other than Apple or Samsung void my warranty? Well good news, the answer is a resounding “No!” – but you’d be forgiven for thinking this was the case, as the rules on this only changed recently. In June 2018, Australia’s ACCC took Apple to court and successfully fined them a whopping $9m for making false or mislead representations to customers with faulty devices. The court decided that the fact that you decided to repair your phone with someone other than Apple could not result in your consumer rights ceasing to apply. A great win for customers!

Myth #3: Uncooked rice fixes water-damaged phones

Everyone’s heard of this one so it had to make it on our list. As the story goes, if your phone is unfortunate to go for an unplanned swim, you can place it in a container of uncooked rice, which will act as a desiccant and magically remove all of the excess moisture. Does It Work?: Unfortunately, no. While rice does absorb water well, it’s not powerful enough to suck out all of the liquid that will be sloshing around the inside of your phone. The key to rescuing your device from water damage is to act quickly; getting the device opened up for cleaning and drying as quickly as possible. We’ve seen the best results when this is done within 48 hours of the accident, or even less if the water damage is from sea water (salt water and electronics make very bad bed buddies!)

Myth #4: Phone repairs are timely and inconvenient

Getting your phone fixed through your telco or an Apple store can be a real headache. Pre-booking, travelling to the store, being without your device for days while it’s sent away for repair – who needs all that hassle? Well now there’s an alternative. fix2U’s nationwide phone and tablet repair service makes all that headache go away. How? By sending certified and vetted technicians directly to your door – at your home, office, or even your favourite cafe. Our friendly techs will fix your phone right in front of you, which means you can get back to business in no time at all. Not only that, we even include a market-beating 5 year guarantee on your repair. Can it get any more easy and convenient that that?

Myth #5: Screen protectors don’t work and are a waste of money

The screen protector of yesteryear pretty much only existed to help make your phone repairer a bit of extra cash on the repair. Made of flimsy plastic, they did little else other than protect your screen from the odd scratch. They also did a great job of making your phone look old and scruffy, with curling corners and plastics that would go yellow over time. Things changed with the introduction of “tempered glass” screen protectors. A good quality tempered glass screen protector is optically clear, as smooth as your original screen, and actually does a very commendable job of protecting your screen from breaking in the event of a drop. We’ve performed countless tests on these screen protectors, and found that they successfully stopped the screen from cracking when dropping a phone onto concrete from a height of 1.5 meters. So they are definitely worth the small investment to help protect your device
